Miami Art Show pays tribute to Jamaican Artist, Colin Garland

COCONUT GROVE – An art show depicting the works of three Jamaican artists is now on display at the Dharma Studio in Coconut Grove, Miami.

The month-long event titled “Respect – A Celebration of Genius” pays tribute to former Jamaican artist, Colin Garland, who died earlier this year.

The three artists currently exhibiting work include young, self-taught artist, Mr. Kacey Ferguson, Ms. Judy Ann McMillan and Ms. Jonna Brasch.

Several pieces by Mr. Garland are also being displayed at the Studio in his honor, according to the curator, Ms. Cynthia Sache Wagner. With a passion for Jamaican art, the Studio has supported and sponsored continuously, works of several Jamaican artists, creating space in which Jamaican art can thrive, according to Consul General, Ricardo Allicock.

Work of Mr. Garland has, on several occasions, been exhibited at Dharma Studio, his last show in May last year.

Speaking at the recent launch of the exhibition, the Consul General described Garland’s work as ‘wondrously indigenous’ indicating that he created pieces with a unique beauty that was completely Jamaican.’

Born in Australia, Mr. Garland had been resident in Ocho Rios of the island for nearly 50 years and his work had symbolized what Jamaica was all about, according to Mr. Allicock.

Garland’s work defied category and detailed a range of expression. Described as a surrealist, his work showed his identity with Jamaica through his choice of vibrant colours combined with a spiritual tradition, an impact of the island.

Meanwhile, the works of Jonna Brasch show how Jamaican women have impacted the artist through their strength and beauty.

Like Garland, Ms. Brasch could be described as paying homage to a cross culture influence of the women of her Danish roots and the Jamaican culture.

Known for her dynamic work depicting still life, the pieces of Miss McMillan are simple in colour and detail as her landscape paintings show her sense of passion for her native Jamaica and its people.

Kacey Ferguson, also known for his details in landscape beauty, draws inspiration from his early childhood lifestyle in rural Jamaica, which he describes as idyllic, living in landscape of extraordinary beauty. While he states that society is losing its connection to the paradise of life, Mr. Ferguson ‘wants his work to bring awareness to the powerful presence of nature and soul connection to the environment.”

All three artists have participated in exhibitions both locally and internationally.
