Jamaica’s St Hugh’s Alumnae of Florida celebrate 25 years with Swansation Event – February 1st
FT. LAUDERDALE – St Hugh’s Alumnae of Florida (SHAAFL) will launch their participation in the school’s 115th Anniversary celebrations, with a Swansation: Celebrating 115 years of Loyalty & Faithfulness event on February 1, 2014, in Sunrise, Florida, featuring a best hat contest, best decorated table contest, silent auction, mother/daughter fashion show, and an impressive line-up of local artists, from 1pm – 4pm for a show you will not forget.
The Nob Hill Soccer Club Park Hall is located at 10200, Sunset Strip Sunrise, FL 33322.
Year-long celebrations staged by the local chapter in Jamaica, include a Homecoming in November 2014, when many South Florida Alumnae and others from across the globe, will convene in Jamaica for a week of celebration.
The Jamaica chapter will also launch the celebration on February 1, 2014 with a 5K Run/Walk. This year’s theme is “Celebrating St. Hugh’s Where Minds Flourish and Loyalty Transforms.”
“We are happy to celebrate the organization’s 25th year in Florida, and the 115 year Anniversary of our alma mater – St. Hugh’s High School “, said Karen Lee Murphy, SHAAFL, “The organization has been able to positively influence the lives of many students and alumnae over the years.”
St Hugh’s High School was founded in 1899, in Kingston, Jamaica by Bishop Nuttall, Archbishop of the West Indies with 26 High School female boarders and a few younger boys and girls in the Preparatory Department.
During the 1906 earthquake, the original school premises were destroyed and the school was relocated to its current campus, a few miles away. As adjoining properties were acquired, numerous buildings were erected and the enrollment has expanded 1600 female students with the co-ed Preparatory Schools housed on another campus nearby.
The school was first named Deaconess Home School and then became St. Hugh’s High School in 1928.
St Hugh’s has always sought to develop the whole person and has been a pioneer in Education. The curriculum caters to the mind, body and soul and has helped form women of moral fortitude and professional success. It recognizes the potential in all, and fosters excellence in whatever is done. Students are encouraged to contribute to those less fortunate and participate continually in service organizations to help the less fortunate.
The Florida Alumnae chapter (SHAAFL) simultaneously celebrates its 25th year anniversary! SHAAFL (http://www.shaafl.org/) was chartered in 1989, and remained active for a couple of years. It was reactivated in 2002 and has been growing from strength to strength, with a current membership of over 150. SHAAFL raises funds to help support needy students at our Alma Mater and also contribute to charities in South Florida, such as Women In Distress, the Kiwanis Christmas in July Program for children, and supports other Alumni/ae in South Florida.
