Jamaica’s GraceKennedy Group CEO Don Wehby to Address Caribbean Diaspora Forum in South Florida
SOUTH FLORIDA – Group Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy Limited, Don Wehby leads a distinguished panel of speakers scheduled to participate in an interactive engagement titled Caribbean Forum, organized by Grace Kennedy Money Services and its business partner Western Union.
The forum which is being held under the theme, “Engaging the Diaspora – Enriching the Caribbean”, will take place on Tuesday, May 6th starting at 4pm at The Miramar Cultural Center, 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar. (Admission is FREE)
Members of the Caribbean Diaspora are invited to come and listen to a number of illustrious speakers as they explore and exchange ideas on: Economic Integration through Education and The Impact of the Dream Act on Education, and the challenges facing University Students of Caribbean Descent.
Joining CEO Don Wehby at the Caribbean Forum are: James Moss-Solomon, Exec-in-Residence at the Mona School of Business, University of the West Indies (UWI); Sean Mason, Regional Vice President Caribbean, Western Union and Dr Mildred E Berry, Dean of Education at Florida Memorial University, and Malou Harrison, President of Education at Miami Dade Community College.
The guest speakers bring a vast wealth of knowledge and experience having worked regionally and internationally in a variety of disciplines.
James Moss-Solomon is the consummate Caribbean professional with proven expertise in commerce and industry and is a key player in a body of work surrounding negotiation, trade relations and other matters related to CARICOM.
Currently, he is on secondment to the Mona School of Business and Management at the University of the West Indies (UWI) as Executive-in-Residence.
Sean Mason is responsible for Western Union’s business across 29 countries and territories in the English, French and Dutch Caribbean, encompassing all company products and services, as well as Agents’ relationship management. With a strong finance and marketing experience, prior to joining Western Union, Mason held positions at globally respected financial institutions, such as American Express and KPMG Peat Marwick, working in Jamaica and the United States.
Mildred E. Berry received a B S degree in Biology from Paine College, a M S degree in Education and Doctorate of Education from Wayne State University. She started her career as an educator with the Miami- Dade County Public Schools as a Biology Teacher. Her first teaching position was at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. She later transferred to Allapattah Junior High School. In 1971, the school district reassigned numerous teachers in an effort to desegrate the faculties of the schools. She was then transferred to Horace Mann Junior High School
Dr. Mildred Berry is a career educator and served as a region science coordinator, a facilitator and writer for the District’s Human Growth and Development Program, Science Supervisor and Director of Magnet Programs for Miami-Dade Public Schools. She has conducted numerous science workshops locally, state-wide, nationally and internationally. She is constantly trying to update and enhance her skills and believes that on-going professional development is an essential part to being an effective educator. Dr. Berry currently serves as the Dean of Education at Florida Memorial University.
Malou C. Harrison is the President of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus, the College’s first location that opened in 1960. The Campus boasts an enrollment of 50,000 students per year and an annual graduating class that represents some 55 nations, including the Caribbean.
With over 30 years of leadership experience in public higher education, Harrison also currently oversees the institution’s two major academic centers, MDC-West in the City of Doral and the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurship Education Center in Liberty City.
President Harrison has served MDC in various capacities since 1989, including as Dean of Students, Chief of Staff to the College President and adjunct professor of English as a Second Language. Prior to her tenure at MDC, she served as an administrator at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Harrison, a proud alumna of St. Hugh’s High School in Kingston, Jamaica, earned her baccalaureate and Master’s degrees from the University of Buffalo and Florida International University, respectively; she is currently completing a doctoral degree at Walden University.
On a national level, President Harrison serves on the Blue Ribbon Committee of the Community College Consortium on Immigrant Education. She also serves on the Miami Dade County Sister Cities Coordinating Council, the City of North Miami University Relations Board, the African American History Task Force of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Educational Excellence School Advisory Council of Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial High School, Executive PASS Partner of Jose Marti MAST Academy and PTSA Vice President of Coral Gables Senior High School.
President Harrison’s tireless dedication to empowering youth and adult learners through the opportunity of a higher education has led her to share her expertise as co-author of scholarly articles in the League for Innovation in the Community College’s Student Services Dialogues: Community College Case Studies to Consider; and also the Association of American College and Universities’ (AAC&U) Peer Review: Models for Student success: Developing a Community College Student Roadmap.
