Jamaica’s Consulate General invites Diaspora Nominations for Honour Roll of Jamaicans in South USA for Gala celebration

MIAMI – Jamaica’s Consul General, Sandra Grant Griffiths is inviting nominations for the Honour Roll of Jamaicans in the Southern USA, for service to their country and community as a part of the commemoration of the nation’s 50th Anniversary of Independence.

To mark the celebrations, the Consulate General will officially host the Jamaica 50th Honours Benefit Gala, “The Journey” to be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Downtown Miami. The highlight of this evening will be the recognition of fifty (50) Jamaicans for service to their country and community by the Government of Jamaica through the Miami Consulate General’s Community Awards event.

Issuing the call for nominations for the Southern USA Honour Roll of Distinguished Jamaicans Consul General said that this recognition is integral to the programme of events celebrating our country’s milestone across the Diaspora. “Our country, our celebrated brand, is very much centered in our people and therefore the great personal successes and community achievements in many spheres are worthy of recognition”, the Consul General declared.

Nominations are categorized in the following fields – Vanguard (landmark pioneers and icons), and Community Luminary (contemporary service). The deadline for submission of nominations is Thursday, May 31.

The areas for selection include education, religious leadership, community development, social services and philanthropy, business entrepreneurs and corporate leaders, health care, cultural arts, entertainment, media, sports, and law and justice. A young community luminary under the age of 18 will be specially recognized among the awardees, and the selection process will be guided by a Jamaica Diaspora Honours Selection Committee.

The Consul General also reiterated that other opportunities were provided for participation in a variety of community activities forming part of the year-long celebrations across Florida, as well as the Consulate’s extended jurisdiction, including Georgia, Texas, the Caymans Islands and the Bahamas.
