Jamaica’s Consul General (Miami) Invites nominations for Honour Roll of Jamaicans in Florida

MIAMI – The Government of Jamaica, through the Office of its Consul General, will be recognising 50 Jamaicans in the state of Florida, in the United States of America (USA), for service to their country and community, as part of its celebration of the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary in 2012.

In issuing the call for nominations for the Honour Roll of Jamaicans in Florida, Mrs. Sandra Grant-Griffiths, Jamaican Consulate General in Miami, said that, “The recognition would be integral to a programme of celebrations in the Florida community, which is currently being planned to commemorate this milestone.”

She was speaking at a mortgage meeting, “Thinking of Buying a Home in Jamaica,” hosted by the Florida Representative Office of Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) at the Kendall Hotel & Suites, Miami, USA, last Thursday (Oct. 6)

The initiative is part of the celebrations of Jamaica’s 50th Independence Anniversary in 2012.
“Our country has achieved great successes in many spheres, including culture, music and sports; and, therefore, we have much to celebrate,” the Consul General declared. She also pointed out that the activities, scheduled for August 2012, will include a church service and a flag raising ceremony, to be held simultaneously with the ceremony at the Grand Gala, to take place in Kingston, Jamaica.

Mrs. Grant-Griffiths encouraged Jamaicans in Florida to register on the Consulate General’s website to receive updates and information about the 2012 celebrations. She also took the opportunity to highlight the fact that, there was need for a new member for the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board, to represent the community in Florida; and encouraged persons to nominate a representative.

More than 120 Jamaicans attended the meeting about real estate opportunities in Jamaica, which included displays and presentations from five housing developers; as well as, the National Housing Trust, the National Land Agency and Jamaica National Building Society.
