Jamaican sworn in as Mayor of South Florida City

LAUDERDALE LAKES – Barrington A. Russell Sr., a Jamaican, who migrated to the United States in 1987 was sworn in today (Nov. 10) as Mayor of the City of Lauderdale Lakes.

In a standing room only swearing in Ceremony,
Barrington Russell Sr. took over as Mayor from former Mayor, Sam Brown who is also of Jamaican Heritage. Several prominenet members of South Florida’s Caribbean-American community were in attendance to witness the ceremony.

Russell won the seat in last week’s election verses Levoyd Williams in which Russell took 52% of the votes. The City of Lauderdale Lakes also has four new Commissioners replacing two Caribbean-American commissioners, Barrington Russell and former Commissioner Hazelle Rogers who was recently elected to State Representative.

Russell was elected as a Commissioner of Lauderdale Lakes in 2004 and has served as Vice Mayor in 2005-2006 and held several other public service positions at the board level and committee levels in civic organizations from, Vice President of the Parent-Teachers Association of Castle Hill Elementary School, President of Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes/West Sunrise, Public Relations Director of Caribbean Heart Menders, Board Member of SOS Children’s Village and Auxiliary Board Member of the Susan B. Anthony Home for battered women.

Before migrating to the United States, Russell worked as a Cadet for the Planning & Research Agency in Kingston. He later joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force and after two years was assigned as an Immigration Officer in Montego Bay. In 1984 he became an insurance agent for Jamaica Mutual Life and quickly achieved No. 1 status.

In 1996, he gained his Brokers License and in 1998 became broker/owner of Barrington A. Russell, P.A. Realtor. On a personal note Russell is married with two children.
