Jamaican student wins Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Environmental Poster Competition

Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaican students continue to garner top honours in the annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Environmental Poster Competition, with Lorenz Rowe of Calabar High School copping the top prize in the senior category of this year’s competition.

The poster competition which focuses on the preservation of the environment is divided into two categories – a senior division (13-16 years old) and a junior division (12 years old and under) – and is open to students from the entire Caribbean region.

“This year’s poster contest attracted entries from 15 nations!” remarked George Orellana, research analyst at the FCCA as he emphasised the number of entries to this year’s competition. “All the posters we received exemplified Caribbean excellence and expressed useful depictions of ways in which to preserve the environment,” he added.

For his winning submission entitled: “We are our environment” Rowe illustrated three colourful scenes in which persons are depicted removing garbage from the streets of a community, a man cleaning the river of wastes and a father and son planting trees along the streetside.

As the winner of the senior category Rowe will be awarded a cash scholarship of US$3,000, as well as, Calabar High which will be awarded a similar amount in lieu of art supplies. Coreen Norman of the Corinaldi Avenue Primary School in Montego Bay was selected to represent Jamaica in the junior category, but did not place in the finals. She will, however, receive US$200 for representing the island in this category. The winning entry in the junior category of the competition came from Nevis.

Lorenz and representatives of the Calabar High School administration will be hosted at a special luncheon onboard one of the FCCA’s member lines calling in Jamaica on April 22, at which time the prizes will be presented.

Last year Huddoy Walters of Port Antonio Primary School in Portland was the winner in the junior category of the finals.
