Jamaican-American to be inducted into Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame

FT. LAUDERDALE – Annette R. Corbett Gardiner a resident of Plantation, Florida originally from Kingston, Jamaica will be inducted into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the 21st Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Luncheon.

This annual event celebrates and honors those Broward County Women who have selflessly contributed to the progression and promotion of women in Broward County. Nominees come from individuals and organizations that have benefited by the actions of these women.


Annette Gardiner

Annette is always working to advance women’s empowerment and rights across all racial, cultural, and economic sectors. She currently serves on the Broward Human Trafficking Coalition and as First Vice Chair of the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women. She works at Broward Healthy Start and has been involved with the Family Connections Mentoring Project for pregnant and parenting women and the Teen Empowerment Program and was also involved in the PTA/PTSO throughout her children’s schooling.

Background

Annette and siblings grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. With the absence of their father, her mother worked very hard to make ends meet. Her mother, Ivy Denton was a single mother and seamstress who was born in Manchester, Jamaica. Her siblings include Lesma Levy/Jamaica, Anthony Corbett/Fort Lauderdale, Fl and Damion McKenzie/Jamaica. Anthony Corbett was the captain of the soccer team in Jamaica in the 80s and a legend in that arena.

She attended St. George’s Girls’ School and then went on to Kingston Technical High in Kingston, Jamaica. Prior to graduating High School, Annette became a teen mom. She was determined to continue her education and after the birth of her first child, enrolled in a community school to complete her education. By the age of 20 years old, Annette had 2 children, Ramon and Sahleesha.

From a young age Annette always advocated for those who could not help themselves.

Annette is a high achiever and decided to complete her education and attended Florida Metropolitan University where she completed her associates in Business Administration and graduated Summa Cum Laude; Nova Southeastern University where she completed and graduated with a Bachelors in Professional Management and a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management.
She has been listed on the National Dean’s List for 2 years (2000-2002).

Family

Annette met and married Joseph Gardiner on June 20, 1987 in Jamaica while he was on a scholarship to study in Jamaica.

Children, include Staff Sgt Ramon Gardiner born in Jamaica and in the United States Marines Corp; Sahleesha Pusey was born in Jamaica and is an accountant, completing her 2nd Masters and the CEO of MathDazed Tutoring; SiCoyia was born in Grand Turk and is a Nurse; Krishard was also born in Grand Turk and is pursuing a degree in Professional Pilot Technology. Two grandchildren, Syniah and Romari that she adores.

Annette attends Plantation Methodist and also visits various churches when invited for fellowship.

Her passion is to Mentor/empower pregnant and parenting teens; she also mentor and tutor adults who are less fortunate. She is a volunteer with Broward County School Board Mentoring Program and was the First Black PTSO President at a Middle in Broward County.

Annette is a Community Advocate for equal rights and justice: voice for the voiceless; campaign advocate and if called upon will not hesitate to assist her community.
