Jamaica National (JN) Members benefit from Financial Wellness advice

PLANTATION – Members of the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) who reside in South Florida benefitted from a recent Financial Wellness Seminar that was hosted by the JNBS Florida Representative Office on March 7, as part of the ongoing efforts of the organisation to up-to-date members about pertinent financial strategies.

The Financial Wellness Seminar, held at the Holiday Inn Resort in Plantation, Florida, welcomed  members residing in the state who received guidance from a panel of presenters, which included Janice McIntosh, JN Chief Representative Officer; Paul Herdsman, National Planning Corporation; and Sheridan Major, Financial Advisor with Lindell Douglas & Associates.

Mrs McIntosh says the seminar was a timely intervention. “We seek to provide our members with information about budgeting, retirement planning, maintaining good credit, investment opportunities in Jamaica, JN mortgage and savings products, and assist with the refinement of their financial literacy.”

Participants were advised about improving their credit score; and received wealth accumulation strategies from Mr Herdsman, who said, “Both areas have a direct impact on Jamaicans in the Diaspora in terms of economic development.” He also pointed out that “When Jamaicans overseas do well; there has always been a positive impact on the country’s economy in areas, such as home investment, business and other opportunities.”

Participants also benefitted from budgeting strategies provided by Ms. Major, who underscored the importance of budgeting, to be able to save and provide a buffer against economic uncertainty.

“It is important for members of the Jamaican Diaspora community in Florida to consider how events in the world economy affect their lifestyle now and during the upcoming years; and, they should improve their understanding about the possible causes and solutions to work through these events,” she stated.

Mrs McIntosh acknowledged that, “While the Representative Office does not provide direct banking services, the wellness seminar and other activities, such as annual mortgage and real estate fairs provide vital links with our members.”

In addition to its regular meetings, the office also provides ongoing assistance to members with registration for the LIVE by JN Online Banking system, which facilitates banking online, at anytime from anywhere.

JN member, Pauline Martin said she was welcomed the opportunity to attend the event, as it showed her “how living from paycheck to paycheck can be damaging to my overall financial wellness,” she said, adding that “I appreciated the scope of the presentations and learning about investment prospects in Jamaica.”
