Jamaica makes history, elects first female President of the People’s National Party (PNP) Portia Simpson-Miller
KINGSTON – Portia Simpson Miller was elected today as the new president of the Peoples National Party (PNP). Portia Simpson-Miller will be the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica and the seventh prime minister overall if elected.
Runner up, Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, got 1,538 votes. The other contenders were the Minister of Finance, Dr. Omar Davies who picked up 283 votes and former cabinet member, Dr. Karl Blythe, polled 204 votes. Eight votes were rejected.
