Jamaica Ex-Police Association of South Florida, Inc. accepting applications for its annual USA and Jamaican scholarships

MIAMI – The Jamaica Ex-Police Association of South Florida, Inc. is now accepting applications for its annual USA and Jamaican scholarships.

Applications for the USA scholarship should be submitted to the scholarship committee of the association by June 1, 2006.

The selection will be made by June14, and the recipient will be notified by June 18, 2006. Applications for the Jamaican scholarship will be handled by the Community Affairs Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The presentation of the USA scholarship will be made at the association’s annual ball on June 24, 2006, at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel, 1825 Griffin Road, Dania, Florida.

The gala under the distinguished patronage of the Hon. Mr. C.P. Ricardo Allicock, Consul General of Jamaica, will commence at 8 pm. Guest speaker is Mr.Robert Parker, Director of Miami-Dade Police Department. Entertainment will be provided by Winston “Merrytone” Blake, O.D. and Sky Force Disco. Master of ceremony is John T of WAVS 1170 AM Radio.

The Jamaican scholarship will be awarded on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at the Ocho Rios Police Station in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, at the conclusion of the association’s annual Jamaica Police Station’s Refurbishing Project. A reception will be held in the afternoon at the conclusion of the project to facilitate the scholarship presentation ceremony.

The criteria for the USA-local scholarship are:

(1) Applicant should be a lawful resident of the tri-county area: Broward, Miami-Dade, or Palm Beach.

(2) Applicant must provide proof of residency of one of the listed counties.

(3) Applicant should be a student in a 2-4 year college, or is accepted in a 2-4 year college.

(4) Applicant must submit a two page essay stating why he/she should be awarded this scholarship. The essay should be typed in 12 inch font, and double spaced.

(5) Applications should be submitted by June 1, 2006.

Criteria for Jamaican Scholarship:

(1) Applicant must be accepted in, or is a student of a Jamaican high school.

(2) Money is to be used to purchase school supplies only (Books, uniform, etc.).

(3) Disbursement of funds will be made over a 1 year period “as needed”.

(4) Disbursement will be administered by the principal of the recipient’s school with a report of expenditures to be submitted by the principal or his/her designee to the Jamaica Ex-Police Association of South Florida, Inc. via the Community Relations Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

(5) The recipient of the scholarship will be selected annually by the Community Relations Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. No division of the police force should be excluded from the selection process.

(6) For the 1 year period of the scholarship, the recipient must attend school regularly and performs within a reasonable standard.
