SOUTH FLORIDA – Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica across South Florida are preparing for a spirited season of celebration as the island marks its 64th year of Independence. From church services and cultural festivals to concerts, galas, and family-friendly gatherings, the commemorations are expected to bring the black, green, and gold into full view across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. This year’s theme: “Jamaica 64 – United In Celebrating Resilience”.
Jamaica Gained Independence
Jamaica gained independence on August 6, 1962, a milestone that continues to inspire pride among Jamaicans at home and throughout the diaspora. In South Florida, Jamaican culture has helped shape the region’s music, food, faith, business, and civic life. Moreover, Independence celebrations have grown into more than a remembrance of history. They are a public expression of identity, resilience, and community.
South Florida Celebrations
This year’s activities reflect the range of ways the community honors the occasion. In Sunrise, the Jamaican Consulate in Miami is expected to host an ecumenical service of thanksgiving and celebration. This will give worshippers a moment to reflect on the nation’s journey and offer prayers for its future.
In Miramar, residents will gather for a Jamaica 64 Independence Day Fete. Here, they will celebrate sound system culture, music, flags, fashion, and the familiar call to “wear your colors.”
Miami will add its own rhythm to the season with the Jamaica Independence Festival in Wynwood. There, music, Caribbean cuisine, and cultural programming are set to create an open-air celebration of heritage. Farther north, Broward and Palm Beach communities are also expected to mark the anniversary with events that highlight reggae, dancehall, gospel, Jamaican food, youth activities, and the intergenerational pride that keeps the culture alive.
