Inaugural U.S. Women’s Cricket Open kicks off in South Florida
LAUDERHILL – The Cricket Stadium at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida will be buzzing with the beauties of sport this Friday morning as sixty of America’s top lady cricketers trade their pumps, perfume and polish for helmets, bats and gloves to kick off the inaugural U.S. Women’s Cricket Open.
The four competing cricket teams represent a true cross section of the USA. The Hollywood Rebels and the Silicon Valley Firebirds will fly in from California, and the Connecticut Tri-State Lynx and New York Warriors will journey from the Northeast to compete the honor of hoisting the U.S. Open Championship Trophy.
For three combative days, Friday the 8th through Sunday the 10th, with FREE ADMISSION to all, the lady players will participate in the second most popular sport in the world. The cricket ball is harder than a baseball and pitched or bowled at a batter at speeds exceeding seventy miles an hour. And if that is not challenging enough, the ball is allowed to skip on the ground right in front of the batter. No, this is not a sport for the faint of heart, and the cricket credentials the women bring to the Open are most impressive. More than twelve of the players from the national Team USA will be playing among the four teams. International players from Canada, the West Indies and South Africa will also be there.
American sports history will be made when the honorary pink commemorative balls are bowled out at The Stadium Friday morning. Commissioner Margaret Bates, City of Lauderhill, Florida, who has pioneered the development of learning centers through sports like cricket will honor this special event. Jennifer Siesel of the American Cancer Society will further celebrate the women’s tournament in conjunction with October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrating 25 Years of awareness, education, and empowerment for women.
Mahammad A. Qureshi of Cricket Council USA exclaimed: “The creation of the First U.S. Women’s Cricket Open honors the hard work and perseverance of our country’s female cricket athletes. The Women’s Open Championship will elevate the profile of our country’s women’s cricket programs and deservedly so.” Cricket Council USA is hosting the ladies’ Open with Title Sponsor, T20 Energy Drinks.
