BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – As Hurricane Igor heads towards Bermuda, its large swells have been affecting St. Kitts and Nevis and surrounding islands, prompting an advisory from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Since Sunday heavy swells have been affecting the coastline with sand being dumped from Pogson’s Bay (between Lavington and Parson’s) on the island’s main road.
“Residents of St. Kitts and Nevis are urgently advised to pay close attention to the conditions associated with the passage of Hurricane Igor, as it is still affecting the waters surrounding the Federation,” said NEMA in a news release,
Less than 300 miles northeast of the Leewards, the sheer size and strength of the system, is creating immense disturbances along the coastlines of the islands. Locally, cloudy spells coupled with scattered showers are expected tonight, as Hurricane Igor travels towards Bermuda.
“Small craft should remain in port and sea bathers are encouraged to stay away from the water, as dangerously rough swells of 9 to 12 feet or approximately 3 to 4 meters, are affecting the coastline,” said NEMA.

Swells are also affecting the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
At 5 P.M. the center of Hurricane Igor was located at Latitude 23.7 North… Longitude 61.1 West and moving towards the northwest near 10 MPH. It is expected to turn towards the North-North-West late Friday or early Saturday. On the forecast track, the center of the Hurricane will be approaching Bermuda on Sunday.
