Honduras and Saint Lucia Establish Diplomatic Relations in the Context of the OAS General Assembly

Asunción, Paraguay  – On Friday, June 6th, Honduras and Santa Lucia  signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations so as to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation among the two nations, in the context of the forty-fourth regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), being held in Asunción, Paraguay.

The Minister for External Affairs, International Trade, and Civil Aviation of Saint Lucia, Alva Romanis Baptiste, said his country is very committed to the work of the OAS and considers it a priority to strengthen its ties “with our brothers and sisters of South America, Central America, and North America.” “We can have a strong OAS only if we are united at the bilateral level, so that when we meet, we are all united in a common hemispheric front. On half of the people and Government of Saint Lucia, I am very happy to sign this agreement,” he added.

For his part, the Assistant Secretary of State of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras, Roberto Ochoa Madrid, said that “with this signature we significantly step up our relations with our Caribbean brothers and sisters. We know the potential this new step we are taking represents–we would call it historic–and are aware of Saint Lucia’s experience in the field of tourism and other areas.” The Honduran diplomat is a member of the Association of Caribbean States, and “we also have a great relationship with CARICOM.”
