SOUTH FLORIDA – Christmas and New Year’s message from the Jamaica Diaspora – Southern USA Advisory Board Member, Dr Susan Lycett Davis:
My Jamaican ‘Diasporans’ – Best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a most prosperous New Year!
What an exciting and involved 2012 it was! I trust we all managed to reflect, and participate in some of the many celebratory events that were staged in recognition of our Nation’s 50th Anniversary of Independence. We give thanks for the many blessings of the past year, both here in the Southern USA and in Jamaica.
As we get ready to approach 2013, my prayer is that we will continue to hold on to our faith, give thanks to our Lord and Savior, sustain and embrace our country pride, and value and support our fellow ‘Diasporans’ in this region and beyond.
I must take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who has reached out to my team and I in the past year. Each message of encouragement or criticism has been helpful in giving us direction in forging ahead in a manner that is inclusive, supportive and all embracing. To those who have sponsored us in any way, your contributions, financial or in-kind, have gone a long way in helping us reach out to Jamaican communities, businesses and organizations, near and far. As Jamaicans, we know very well “every mickle mek a muckle” so no amount of money, product or service is too small for us to utilize.
The Jamaican Diaspora is invited and encouraged to get involved in the affairs of our island home. As we know, Jamaica is a blessed island, one for which we can be proud despite our challenges, as is so evident in among other things, the “One People” film/documentary that is being screened around the world. (If you haven’t seen it yet, make it a priority for the New Year).
For 2013, we will continue our commitment to raise funds to:- purchase blood pressure machines for hospitals and clinics in Jamaica; build a well needed basic school in our effort to support early childhood education; and support the “Reggae Girlz” and females pursuing football (soccer) as an avenue to help address social, physical and professional welfare. Youth and Young Adults are our focus……they are our future, help us, help them!
