BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The United States says its friendship with St. Kitts and Nevis is rooted in a long and vibrant history and both nations share strong values and support for democracy, the rule of law and universal human rights.
“On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis as you celebrate the 29th anniversary of your independence this September 19,” said United States Secretary of State, the Hon. Hilary Clinton.
In her congratulatory message to mark the occasion, the senior United States official noted that the “friendship between our two countries is rooted in a long and vibrant history.”
“The first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton was born on the shores of Nevis. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, traced his family to St. Kitts. Nevisian daughter Constance Baker Mottley was the first African-American woman elected to the New York State Senate and played a key role in the civil rights movement,” said Mrs. Clinton.
She added: “Our friendship, shared values and support for democracy, rule of law, and universal human rights remains as strong as ever. We will continue to work together to ensure the security of our region, economic stability, and improved health and prosperity for our citizens through such programs as the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States stands with you.”
