BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Counter-terrorism takes the spotlight when high-level officials from the Caribbean region with responsibility for security and foreign affairs meet in St. Kitts from July 7th to 9th.
The St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino is the venue for a sub-regional workshop for all Caribbean nations hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mrs. Astona Browne, said the workshop will train over 20 participants targeted from among the UN’s regional membership, to prepare responses dealing with counter-terrorism, to be forwarded to the United Nations’ Security Council Committee.

The Workshop is jointly facilitated by experts from the Inter-American Counter Terrorism Committee (CICTE) and the Organization of American States (OAS) office in Washington DC and the United Nation.
It will familiarise Member States with the implementation and reporting obligations relevant to Security Council Resolutions as well as to provide the necessary assistance to boost their legislative capacity in the area of anti-terrorism.
The workshop is expected to agree on a document that reflects the outcome of the meeting to ensure effective follow-up actions by the UNODC.
“Despite current financial constraints the world over, we are honoured that St. Kitts and Nevis has again been selected for the hosting of a conference of this magnitude,” said Mrs. Browne.
