Former Jamaica Prime Minister to be honored by Caribbean lawyers

HOLLYWOOD – Former Jamaica Prime Minister Hon. P.J. Patterson will be honored by the Caribbean Bar Association (CBA), South Florida chapter at its annual awards banquet on Saturday (Sept. 29) at the Westin Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood.

Mr. Patterson who is also the guest speaker at the 12th annual awards and scholarship banquet will be honored for his outstanding contribution to the Caribbean American community as well as his work in the development of CARICOM and CSME.

According to CBA President, Ms. Pamela Gordon, Mr. Patterson will be the first recipient of the newly established category of award – Government Award – of the Caribbean Bar Association.

The former Prime Minister recently retired from active duty in February last year, having served 14 years in that capacity (1992-2006).

In addition, Florida’s Governor, Mr. Charlie Crist will also receive the Government award, while the community service award will be presented to Commissioner Winston Barnes of the City of Miramar, who is also a Jamaican national. Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale will be honored for its continued support and contribution also to the Caribbean American community.

Caribbean cultural performances and exhibits will also form part of the evening’s entertainment.
The Caribbean Bar Association was founded in 1994 by three Jamaican lawyers in South Florida and has grown to an enrolment of almost 200 attorneys from the Caribbean-American communities in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, practising in several areas of law.

Other chapters are now active in Central Florida serving Tampa, Orlando and Melbourne areas.
