Effects of Tropical Storm Tomas causes Landslides and flooding in Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – As of Sunday, Oct 31st, the following areas were affected due to heavy rains in Trinidad:

Areas affected by Landslides: Mount St. George, Mason Hall, Moriah, Pembroke, Argyle, Betsy’s Hope, Cinnamon Hill, Les Couteaux, Roxborough, Plymouth Road, Belle Garden, Deleford, Castara.

Areas affected by flooding: Mount St. George, Belle Garden, Argyle, Roxborough, Goldsborough, Pembroke, Canaan, Speyside, Buccoo.

The National Emergency Operations Centre of the ODPM, which was activated with representatives from agencies such as TTEC, TTFS, TTDF, SAUTT, TT Air Guard, URP, CEPEP and the Ministry of Works and Transport. From this centre, response and relief were coordinated.

Thirty-five reports have been received by direct contact with TEMA and the 211 call centre. Further reconnaissance and Damage Assessment Needs Analysis (DANA) are being conducted to allow for response and assistance where necessary.

Officials from the ODPM are also in Tobago assisting officials from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) with the response and coordination of relief.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Honourable Prime Minister along with the Minister of National Security; Minister for Tobago Development and CEO of the ODPM visited areas most adversely affected by landslides and flooding.

Areas affected in Trinidad by landslides are Mission Village, Toco, Balandra and Toco Road.

Areas affected in Trindady by flooding are Depot Road, Cumana Village Toco, Fartan Trace, Balandra, Mission Village, Toco, Big Bay San Souci; Maura Trace, Cumana Toco; Mayaro Market; Mayaro Junction; Agostini Road; Bristol Road; Mile End; Navet and Union Village.

Toco:- MOLG is still in the process of conducting an Initial Damage Assessment and providing relief in the form of cots, mattresses and food hampers to the affected residents. MOWT has cleared roadways of fallen trees and debris and has also assisted in removing several landslides. URP and CEPEP assisted MOWT in clearing roads. The Councillor for the area, Terry Rondon was also present visiting the affected areas an residents

Mayaro/Rio Claro:- The Disaster Management Unit of this corporation is currently conducting an Initial Damage Assessment of the impacted areas. Some relief items in the form of mattresses and hampers have been distributed to affected residents.

The Minister of Works and Transport and other officials from the ministry visited the affected areas and assessed the damage that was caused from over spillage of some river courses.

Additional action

Clean up and monitoring of the weather conditions during the evening.

The Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and the Mayaro/ Rio Claro Regional Corporation will continue to conduct damage assessments late into this evening. Further relief supplies will be provided tomorrow by MOLG and Ministry of the People and Social Development.

The ODPM continues to coordinate response and relief to both islands at this time.
