Economy: Front and Center at CARICOM

BELIZE CITY, Belize – Bermuda’s Premier Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown is in Belize City, Belize attending the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting where the region’s leaders are having their first opportunity to talk collectively about the current global economic crisis.

“All parts of the Caribbean region are affected by the economic downturn and as members of CARICOM we are sharing our joint experiences and knowledge in addressing these issues,” the Premier said. “These issues are not easy to solve but they become somewhat easier when we can rely on each other, especially because challenges like stabilizing banks and protecting tourism are issues we all share in common.”

Premier Brown is participating in an agenda that includes the economy chiefly, but also varied topics like crime and security and air service development.

Prime Ministers Bruce Golding of Jamaica, David Thompson of Barbados, Roosevelt Skerritt of Dominica and Tillman Thomas of Grenada along with Presidents Ronald Venetiaan of Suriname and Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana are in attendance.

Yesterday’s sessions also set the stage for the considerable regional effort to host the 5th Summit of the Americas next month in Trinidad and Tobago. President of the United States Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada are expected to attend.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning of Trinidad and Tobago has signaled that the participation of the Bermuda Regiment in the detailed security arrangements for the Summit would be welcomed and Premier Brown has undertaken to do all he can to assist and is set to discuss this further with Minister David Burch who is the Minister responsible for Home Affairs in Bermuda.
