LAUDERHILL – The first annual International Curry Festival is scheduled to take place on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 2008 – 10 am to 10 pm – at Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 N.W. 11th Place in Lauderhill.
The festival will appeal to the many ethnic groups that utilize this very popular spice in food preparation; as well as those who enjoy foods prepared using this exotic spice. Attendance is anticipated from the Asian, Caribbean and Indian communities in South Florida as well as the mainstream population who will find the festival attractive and enjoyable.
The International Curry Festival will feature a number of vendors selling a variety of Curry cuisine; everyone has their own special blend and special recipe. A variety of different gastronomically enticing curry creations including Curry Chicken, Vegetables, Lamb, Goat, Lobster, Shrimp and other innovative and unusual preparations will be on hand for all to experience.
“We have made every effort to make the curry festival very attractive to all ethnic persuasions in order that everyone can come and enjoy this unique event.” commented Vanly Ramsay, President of International Curry Festival, Inc., organizers of the event. “It took us a while to get it off the ground, but we are proud of the final product we are offering.”
One of the main features of the festival is the Curry Duck Cook-off, presented by Coconut Wines and Spirits; a serious contest where individuals compete for cash, bragging rights and the first-place trophy. A distinguished panel of judges will select the winner. This tradition is very popular among the populace of Trinidad & Tobago and is sure to attract a large number of competitors as well as a throng of supporters who will cheer and root for their favorite contestant.
Other activities include a 20/20 cricket match between the South Florida Cricket Alliance and a South Florida International Eleven, guaranteed to be a spectacular contest for cricket fans. In addition, a netball match between Broward County teams will add to the excitement of the day’s activities.
The event will climax with the “Curry Concert” featuring the pulsating rhythms of the Caribbean and Asia. Performances by several top entertainers include; Code Red Band, reggae singers Mikey Spice and Mikal Rustle, chutney star Rikki Jai from Trinidad, the Haitian sensation T-Vice and the legendary Caribbean band, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires.
Tickets for the International Curry Festival go on sale Monday May 26, 2008 and are available at selected Caribbean outlets. Ticket prices start at ten dollars ($10).
