Cuban-American Leaders Call on Sen. George LeMieux to Listen to Conscience, Pass the DREAM Act Today

Miami – In anticipation of today’s expected votes on the DREAM Act, Florida youth will join Cuban-American leaders to host a telephonic press conference calling on Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) to allow hard-working immigrant youth to give back to the country they love. Florida Republicans, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, have all come out in support of the DREAM Act, increasing the pressure on Senator LeMieux to join his colleagues and support the legislation.

The DREAM Act is a bipartisan measure that would enable high-achieving young people – immigrants who have been raised here, have worked hard in school, and then pursue higher education or serve in the military – to achieve the American Dream. The DREAM Act allows qualified young people who lack legal immigration status to earn their citizenship and give back to the only country they know as home.

DREAM youth are stepping up efforts in the final moments before the vote. The group is talking to every Senate and House office, sharing their stories and calling on Members of Congress to work together to pass the DREAM Act. In a letter sent to Republican senators yesterday, the United We Dream Network urges, “We simply can’t wait any longer for the perfect process. For us, this is not a ‘political’ issue – it is a fight for our lives, our futures.”
