Cricket fever hits St. Kitts
Basseterre, St. Kitts – In St. Kitts, January is already turning out to be a month full of achievements. Last weekend saw the historic arrival of the British Airways inaugural flight from Gatwick, London on Saturday, January 10, 2009.
The island is now bustling with Cricket Fever as it awaits the arrival of the England Cricket Team, which starts its much anticipated Caribbean tour on January 21 when a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft will flag stop into St Kitts from London to drop off the England team under the leadership of its new captain and coach.
Senator Ricky Skerritt
Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, who is himself a former manager of the West Indies cricket team, said, “We are very pleased about the prospect of increased tourism business from the UK in 2009 and we are equally pleased that the England cricket team will be starting their tour preparations in St Kitts. We will extend them our warm Caribbean hospitality and do all we can to help the England squad enjoy their time on island to the fullest.”
Last November’s announcement by the England Cricket Board confirming that the two preparation warm-up matches were to be held in St. Kitts represented a distinct opportunity for the island, particularly following the island’s hosting of key matches in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.
The England cricket team will arrive in St. Kitts on Wednesday January 21, where they will play two three-day warm up matches as follows:
