Community Blog: I Have a Jamaican Third Cousin – Twice Removed

By: Pat White

FT. LAUDERDALE – Wow, it seems like everyone is boasting of some long lost Jamaican relative, ever since the Team’s outstanding performance in the Olympic Track and Field division.

Everyone is grasping at some kind of Jamaican connection, far fetched as it may be.

I overheard a conversation that some ladies were having recently. “My Aunt’s husband’s is Jamaican,” one said. “My grandparents are Jamaican,” said another. I was born in Haiti, but I lived in the Bahamas,” another one mentioned. And the conversation went on and on with bursts of laughter in between. I also heard them bragging about who can talk patois and teasing those who can’t.

In one of my earlier blogs, I wrote about the dilemma some people had with the Patois language.

Now non-Jamaicans are competing to see who can speak it and who can’t. I wonder what those people who dislike the dialect are saying now. Are you finally embracing the culture and patois along with it?

Well, I guess its just human nature to want to be associated with positiveness and victory. And, you can’t really blame them. After all, being positive is contagious. Everyone wants a little piece of success and glory. So, keep boasting about your Jamaican Third Cousin – Twice removed. We’re not mad at you.
