Commentary with Winston Barnes: SHAME!

DAVIE – For much of the Caribbean American community, the up-coming elections bear much significance, in great part because it is a distinct possibility a Black man could very well become the next president of these united states. After that however, it appears many in the community have little interest.

I submit this is not only short sighted but it is absolutely counterproductive. A number of people have been saying that voting for only the national ticket means one does not help make decisions that affect one at the very local level. Some people either don’t understand that or refuse to pay attention.

But I have become suspicious that there is a more critical reason for this apparent lack of interest. One caller told our talk show she can not bother to get a headache over studying the sample ballot. That is probably far more revealing that some might suspect.

In a conversation with specialists who work with people seeking immigration benefits, I was told how people who are functionally illiterate face untold challenges because they can not read or write. I now suspect that some who say they won’t study the sample ballot might fall into this category.

Along with the sheer nonsense, many in the community continue to talk. It will be no wonder that despite all the talk, the community will continue to be ignored by important decision makers, especially at the local level.
