Commentary With Winston Barnes: Information – Type 1 Diabetes
South Florida – In our usual conversation last week, Dr. Alexis spoke to a new development in the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. It involves the insertion of a cell that once it begins its intended work, basically behaves like a pancreas and secretes insulin in the way a healthy organ would.
Of even equal significance the so-far successful first procedure was on a patient right here in South Florida at the University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute.
My question is how many of us in this community are even aware of this page one story from last Thursday (Sept. 10). I am prepared to submit that not many are and that is a major travesty. In a community where Type 1 Diabetes (Diabetes in general) is at epidemic levels people should be lining up to get involved in the on-going research instead of lining up to purchase the latest electronic device.
For far too long our community has had an inappropriate set of priorities. Here is one that should be what is sometimes called a no-brainer. Bottom line is that black people, especially Caribbean folk suffer from diabetes disproportionately. These are the people who should be jumping on this bandwagon that offers a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
