Commentary With Winston Barnes: Foolishness?
SOUTH FLORIDA – It is difficult to abide the ignorance so many people across our community continue to propagate. The one under review this time around concerns families who refuse to accept college scholarships that would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In two separate conversations on the weekend, I was told that parents across the community go out of their way to seek out school loans for their children going to college. For me this is absolutely asinine. Every year millions and millions of dollars get returned to scholarship providers because people simply do not apply for the money.
Last Monday I asked a guest on our show, a Financial Adviser to talk about parents applying for scholarships and his response? He said, “apply for the scholarship for short people, the one for tall people, the one for people whose mother belonged to a particular tribe from wherever”! In other words, there are thousands of scholarships with an incredible variety of backgrounds and qualifications. To get these scholarships, the most serious job to be done is to spend the time to apply for them.
Instead of wasting time gossiping on the cell phone, playing childish games on the tablet, use up the time to find the money to send your children to college. But then again, maybe one prefers to end up with college loans that could buy two or three houses?
