Commentary with Winston Barnes: Are you prepared to vote in this year’s election?

By: Winston Barnes

DAVIE – As the date for national elections near, those who are procrastinators need to shape up. If that is, they want to participate in those elections. In the state of Florida the challenge is a little more critical because of newly promulgated laws.

Not only do voters have to register by a week from today, but they must also ensure the address on their voter registration card and o their identification, usually a driver’s license are one and the same.

The talk and even arguments that have been a part of daily life across the community for close to two years will be of nought if voters set up themselves to be disenfranchised by folk who have no compunctions of frustrating voters, especially those new to the system and to the chicanery that occurs in this country like all countries where voting honestly and freely, is concerned.

In addition, as much of the community, new citizens usually take voting seriously, in part because many come from countries originally, where not many people, if any, are allowed to vote, reasons for the community to be wary.

Would it not be sad of after all the talk about politics, about supporting one candidate or another, for even one vote to be denied because of a technicality? Would it not be doubly sad if the fault is that of the individual who did not adequately prepare to vote?

Fact is, those who would disenfranchise a voter do not need any help to do so.
