MIAMI – America has long taken the position when it comes to the Olympics, it is all about America and their accomplishment. They are not the least concerned about the Jamaican diaspora or any other non- American ethnicity.
Let’s face it, they just came around to giving African Americans their props!
Remember Mexico City 40 years ago when 2 African Americans took a stand for Black Solidarity? People of African Decent have to display extraordinary feats and be American to be recognized.
Yes we should be more vocal in our criticism, but we also need our own media outlets to service our needs. NBC did what they needed to do to protect their interests.
We have been migrating to this country since 1920. Other ethnic groups i.e. Hispanics started migrating here in the early sixties. They have 2 major TV networks and a host of Radio and small TV groups. What have we accomplished? Where are our networks? Guess what, the money is there.
There are Jamaican entrepreneurs all over the US and around the world with assets that can fund TV networks in the US, the UK and Canada. What are they doing? Let’s not complain when these things happen. Let’s pool our economics and marry it to our expertise and make this happen.
Caribbean Satellite Network was a one man show; it could not survive on private funds. But if we pool our resources and take it public, then a real Caribbean Network is attainable. Let’s put our media minds together.
Our African brothers and sisters in their depraved state on the Continent are making moves. Other groups are doing it. What’s wrong with us? Is it that we are too selfish and don’t want to mix with others? Are we of the mindset that a TV network is not necessary?
What’s the excuse? There is none.
