Caricom Heads support WI Cricket Restructuring

PORT OF SPAIN – Chairman of Caricom’s Prime Ministerial Committee responsible for cricket, Dr. Keith Mitchell, said the current structure of West Indies (WI) Cricket needs to be reviewed.

Dr. Mitchell was speaking at a press conference at the 17th Inter-Sessional Caricom Heads of Government Meeting at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre, on Friday February 10. Prime Minister Mitchell said the President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) informed him that the Board would set up two specialist committees to deal with regional cricket’s major problems.

The first committee, to be headed by Dr. Grenville Phillips, will address the Board’s restructuring and financial matters such as debt alleviation and locating new revenue sources. The second committee will be dedicated to cricket and will advise the WICB on all cricketing matters such as coaching staff recruitment and cricket development.

He said Heads supported the initiatives and intended to offer Caricom associate member status to the WICB so that it could share its progress at Caricom meetings.

Prime Minister Mitchell said Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007 to be held in the Caribbean was also discussed and the Heads were given a detailed analysis of the current situation by CWC 2007 CEO Chris Dehring.

Heads were told that while certain territories were behind schedule the problems could be dealt with quickly. “We are very much on the ball as far as our preparations for hosting one of the best World Cups the world has ever seen” he said.
