Caribbean Businesses and Organizations Join Forces to Elevate Breast Cancer Awareness

MIAMI – For the 6th year, a group of Caribbean businesses and organizations, known as D’ Limers, have teamed up for the Annual Komen Race for the Cure taking place on Saturday, October 16, at Bayfront Park, in Downtown Miami.

In 2008, the Susan G. Komen Foundaiton celebrated its 25th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with well over one million participants since 2005. The Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

In an effort to raise awareness and activism in the Caribbean-American community about the impact of breast cancer, the D’Limers team is using the spirit of music, food, and culture to inspire collective participation. After the walk, the team will enjoy a Caribbean themed breakfast and Caribbean music, courtesy of DJ House Arrest, at the D’ Limers team tent.

Team participants include Bilmor Advertising with Specialties, Circle of One Marketing, delancyhill, P.A., Florida Caribbean Students Association (FCSA) and FCSA Alumni, Foxx Creations Entertainment, Invizio, Jewel Miami’s OASIS Cooler Fete and Vale Vibe, Six Axis Entertainment, South Florida Caribbean News (SFLCN.com), Tammy Lynn’s Aromatherapy, The Art of Exotic Dancing for Everyday Women, Tropical Smoothie at Deerwood Center, Visionz Marketing, among others.

A minimum of 25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs, which fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world. Up to 75 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race stays in the local community to fund breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects.

“Breast cancer has afflicted the African-American and Caribbean-American community in a disproportionate manner compared to other demographic groups. We hope to heighten the level of awareness to encourage more women to engage in preemptive screening. Together, we will beat this disease,” stated Marlon Hill, partner with delancyhill, P.A. and husband to breast cancer survivor, Carla Hill.

“Support from family and friends is a key component to surviving any breast cancer treatment regimen. Our team is building a support network for participating families and organizations. It is one of the best ways to make an impact,” noted Irvine Headley, owner of Bilmor with Advertising Specialties.
