Business Futurist Marvin Dejean To Speak About the Growing Dangers of Social Media For Kids at Palmer Trinity
Miami – Leading business futurist and author Marvin Dejean will be speaking to parents and invited guests at Palmer Trinity School on February 6th from 7:00 PM-8:00 PM on the need and the growing dangers of new social media platforms for kids today.
In his talk entitled “Going Beyond Facebook: The Truth About Kids and The Future of Social Media”, Dejean will guide parents through the dizzying maze that children often navigate in today’s quickly evolving social media scene.
“Skout, KiK, MeetMe and Wikr are just some of the names of the new social media platforms that children are logging into and sharing information that can lead to a host of unintended consequences-and most parents haven’t even heard of them.” states Dejean
In today’s highly evolved social media environment, children have moved beyond Facebook and Twitter to a burgeoning universe of apps, photo sharing and “hook up” sites that promises to keep them anonymous or to delete embarrassing pictures in a few seconds. But the truth is many kids are opening themselves up to dangerous interactions with strangers and peers that can lead to problematic issues down the line.
Dejean will speak to parents about the necessity to monitor children’s activities online with virtual software as well as creating online “community watch” groups made up of parents, teachers, family members and other concerned adults whose sole purpose is to monitor and discuss children’s behaviors and conversations online and their mobile phones.
“In this shifting environment, parents need to treat social media as a double-edge sword where on one hand children must begin defining their digital footprint, but on the other watch for online behaviors that can come back to haunt them in the worse way in the future. Talking to kids about the dangers of certain behaviors on social media is just as important as talking to them about sex, drunk driving and drugs today.” further states Dejean.
