Broward County’s Complete Count Partners Expo Raises Awareness About The 2010 Census

BROWARD COUNTY – Broward County Commissioner and Chair of the Broward County Complete Count Committee Ilene Lieberman, Regional Director of the Atlanta Region for the U.S. Census Bureau George Grandy Jr. and community leaders who comprise the Broward County Complete Count Committee hosted a 2010 Census Partners Expo last week at Tree Tops Park in Davie.

The event was kicked off with a live performance of a catchy new Census Song, urging residents to “Participate, participate, because Broward Counts!” in the 2010 Census. Commissioner Lieberman welcomed the crowd and encouraged everyone to promote the Census and help spread the word that Census data is 100% confidential, to ensure a complete count in Broward County when Census forms are mailed next March. George Grandy Jr. spoke about the Census from a regional perspective and congratulated Broward County on being the first county in the nation to form a Complete Count Committee.

Sandy Harris, Executive Director, Broward County Legislative Delegation presented an official 2010 Census Proclamation to Mr. Grandy on behalf of Broward state representatives.

Commissioner M. Margaret Bates, City of Lauderhill, Chair of the Broward League of Cities Census Committee and Chair of the Countywide Coordination Committee spoke about the importance of local government collaboration, and the variety of creative ways that cities are promoting the Census.

The Expo was well attended by more than 100 community, religious and business leaders, along with key stakeholders who were anxious to meet with colleagues who are also working hard to promote the 2010 Census. They explored collaborative opportunities, shared ideas and learned about the variety of educational and promotional materials available, including materials developed to reach non-English speaking residents and the visually impaired. Census materials are available locally in English, Spanish, Creole, Portuguese and large print.

“This expo beautifully illustrates how diverse groups can pull together to fully engage our multiple demographics and constituents,” said Commissioner Lieberman. “By aligning ourselves and joining forces, we will reach our common goal of increasing participation, receiving an accurate count and ensuring full funding and representation for all Broward County residents.”

Broward County’s Complete Count Committee is an organization of more than 200 community leaders, city and county government and community organizations that have volunteered their time and talents to raise awareness about the importance of the 2010 Census. Nine subcommittees (Hard to Enumerate, Cultural and Ethnic, Education, Religious Institutions, Promotions, Recruitment, Sponsorship, Countywide Coordination and Unincorporated Areas) shared their plans to galvanize the community through outreach to their constituents.
