Broward Center partners with local organizations to present Jamaican Dance Troupe

FT. LAUDERDALE – When the acclaimed National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) takes the stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Amaturo Theater on February 10, it will be the first time that the internationally acclaimed troupe will be performing at the prestigious venue.

Having made several appearances at other venues in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, this special benefit performance is the result of a uniquely innovative collaboration between the Broward Performing Arts Center, Jamaica Awareness, Inc. and the Jamaican Diaspora Southern U.S.

The partnership reflects a vision for community building, a commitment to inclusion and diversity, and a desire for greater collaboration for building cultural projects for the benefit of Jamaican and broader communities in South Florida.

“The Broward Center is delighted to enter into this collaborative partnership. Consistent with our mission, we strive to be a leader in promoting cultural events to our increasingly diverse community with an emphasis on fostering a cooperative spirit and positively impacting the local economy and community,” stated Mark Nerenhausen, President/CEO, Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “The Jamaican community has a rich culture and heritage that contributes vibrantly to the local economy and tourism industry. This partnership is an investment in our community’s cultural landscape.”

The Broward Center’s commitment to be inclusive of, and appealing to the community and its diversity, began a few years ago with the staging of the annual ReggaeSoca Music Awards, which is lauded for its high production qualities and Hollywood-like star appeal. Given the success of the Awards show, the Center furthered its efforts to land other high-caliber productions.

NDTC Danccers

An internationally celebrated ensemble, NDTC embodies the movements of the African Diaspora with the history, traditions and heritage of the Caribbean. From elegant and regal testimonies of the Caribbean’s colonial history, to the indigenous, soulful and ritualistic realities of social, political and spiritual commentary, NDTC deals with the realities of acculturation in Jamaica and globally; wherever Jamaicans and other Caribbean people have settled. In its colorful history, NDTC has presented Jamaica around the world through dance.

It comes to the Broward Center on February 10 with a new repertoire of works by established and emerging choreographers, who are also responsible for the Company’s new mode of operation and direction, embracing renewal and continuity.

Tickets can be purchased through the Broward Center box office or online at www.browardcenter.org. Patrons holding VIP tickets will enjoy an exclusive pre-performance reception to meet and mingle with senior members of the troupe, local officials and sponsors.

The performance is being staged by Jamaica Awareness, Inc., under the auspices of the Jamaican Consulate General with proceeds benefiting the development of the Jamaican Diaspora movement in the Southern United States.
