“Breathing new life “– Saint Lucia’s Agriculture Sector to be restored

ST. LUCIA – The restoration of life into the agricultural sector and the path defined to do so has been outlined by Prime Minister the Right Honourable John Compton, under six broad headings.

The prime minister in his Budget Address on the 2007/ 08 estimates of expenditure said the decline which has presided over agriculture must be brought to a halt.

Prime Minister Compton recommended that as an economic base more must be done to create and reinforce self-sustaining linkages between agriculture and other sectors particularly tourism.

The Prime Minister said a concerted effort will be made to promote the sale of domestic agricultural produce to the hotels, restaurants and supermarkets.

Other programs he outlined included the renewal of the Union Agricultural Station, the development of the Roseau Research Complex and the Beausejour Station as centers of excellence. Plans for the establishment of new fisheries facilities were also highlighted as well as the completion and handing over of the National Abbatoir within the next 18 months.

In respect to bananas the Prime Minister said it has been recognized that Inland Reception and Distribution Centers are under utilized and ill-equipped to serve as reception facilities.

He proposed the upgrading of those facilities. The Prime Minister winded down the list of plans by indicating that government will undertake major investments in this fiscal year, all designed to revitalize agriculture.
