Bermuda’s Premier congratulates new Congressional Black Caucus leadership in Washington

HAMILTON, Bermuda – Bermuda’s Premier, Dr. Ewart F. Brown offered his congratulations today to the newly elected Chair and Secretary of the Congressional Black Caucus.

California Congresswoman Barbara Lee was elected this week the 21st Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus by a unanimous vote, while North Carolina Congressman G.K. Butterfield is the new CBC Secretary.

In a letter to Rep. Lee the Premier said, “Wanda and I offer our heartfelt best wishes and sincere congratulations to you on your unanimous election as the 21st Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. We are so thrilled to see this important national position go to such a deserving Member of Congress and dear friend.”

In a letter to Rep. Butterfield the Premier said, The new Congress and the soon-coming administration are historic in so many ways for the United States; it’s fitting that you will have a leadership role as Secretary of the CBC.”

The Premier and Deputy Premier have met with Congressman Butterfield in Bermuda and Washington many times over the past few years. The North Carolinian has family ties to Bermuda.

Upon taking her new position Rep. Lee said: “I want to thank my distinguished colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus for this awesome honour to serve as your chair for ‘such a time as this’.

“The Congressional Black Caucus leads this congress on each and every issue with intelligence, commitment and power, yet continues to be the conscience of the Congress and the voice of the voiceless. I thank the new officers for agreeing to be a part of my leadership team and all of our prior chairs for visionary leadership of this caucus.”

Currently, there are 41 Members of the Congressional Black Caucus including four full Committee Chairs, 15 Subcommittee Chairs and one member serving as part of the Democratic Leadership.
