Becker & Poliakoff Attorney To Serve In Bahamas Parliament

FT. LAUDERDALE – The Law Firm of Becker & Poliakoff today announced that shareholder and Board Certified Tax Attorney L. Ryan Pinder, head of the firm’s Nassau, Bahamas office, was sworn in and seated as a Member of Parliament of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas on April 14.

Mr. Pinder will serve in the 41-member House of Assembly where he becomes the youngest member for the Progressive Liberal Party and one of only two Members of Parliament born in an Independent Bahamas. He will continue to practice law in the U.S. and Bahamas as a dual licensed attorney.

Mr. Pinder, whose family has been in the Bahamas for more than 300 years, will hold the seat representing the Elizabeth Constituency, which he won in the February election. He follows in the footsteps of his father, L. Marvin Pinder, who was a Member of Parliament from 1987 to 1992.

As a Becker & Poliakoff attorney, Mr. Pinder provides U.S. counsel to companies and individuals doing business in the Bahamas as well as to Bahamians seeking U.S. legal advice. Specifically, he advises U.S.-based service providers and contractors who are looking at opportunities related to the wide-scale investment boom in various infrastructure, hospitality and other projects approved by the Bahamas Government. He also serves as the editor of “Tax Alert,” the firm’s newsletter on tax issues.

Mr. Pinder ran on a platform that included a commitment to comprehensive national health care for all people regardless of their ability to pay and to policies that support job creation through small business training and development and programs that attract diversified industries.

Mr. Pinder attended Queens College and St. Andrews School in Nassau before attending high school in New York at The Stony Brook School. He is a graduate of the University of Miami where he earned a Bachelors of Business Administration in International Finance and Marketing; a Masters of Business Administration in Finance; a Juris Doctor Law degree; and a LLM in International Taxation. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2000.

Mr. Pinder is married to Melissa Calvin Pinder and they have two children, Olivia Rose and Leo Austin.
