Barbados and Austria looking at improved relations

BARBADOS – Barbados and the Republic of Austria are interested in strengthening their relations.

This was noted today when the Special Envoy of the Austrian Government and former Austrian Foreign Minister, Ambassador Dr. Peter Jankowitsch, called on Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business, Christopher Sinckler. The Special Envoy has visited several CARICOM countries already.

As indicated by Minister Sinckler, Barbados enjoyed good diplomatic relations with Austria; but he noted, however that there were opportunities to forge closer ties.

The Minister and the Special Envoy discussed possible cooperation between the two countries in tourism, scholarships and training, the sharing of technology for the management of disasters and climate change, particularly as it pertains to global warming, and renewable energy sources.

Minister Sinckler noted that he would welcome Austria’s support in international fora for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He also alluded to the challenges of CARICOM member states in the fight against crime and security of the region’s borders from drug traffickers.

In turn, Ambassador Jankowitsch highlighted his country’s work at the level of the United Nations in peace keeping, development assistance and the rule of law.

Barbados and Austria established diplomatic relations in 1967. Ambassador Jankowitsch is based in Caracas, Venezuela.
