Bahamian Physician selected Caribbean Science Icon

NASSAU, The Bahamas – During March of this year the National Institute of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (NIHERST) located in Trinidad and Tobago, which is the official regional headquarters for the Caribbean Council for Science and Technology (CCST) selected a Bahamian Physician as the Caribbean Science Icon 2007.

The NIHERST/ CCST Award is granted under the sponsorship of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is the United Nation regional body.

Dr. Glen S. Beneby, Medical Advisor at the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) has been bestowed the honor for outstanding contribution to the development of science in the Bahamas and the Caribbean region.

As a result of the Award Dr. Beneby will be the featured personality in the NIHERST “Science Technology and Innovation” Publication which gives details about the work, contributions and life experiences of the awardees for circulation throughout the Caribbean region.

The aim is to attract the attention of young people to develop an interest in science and science related subjects.

In addition, the award is to motivate interest in science aligned professions and to identify leading scientists as mentors in the field of science from Caribbean Countries.

The NIHESRT Publication is intended for free distribution to schools and public libraries in all member countries of Caricom in the Caribbean region.

Dr Glen S. Beneby is the first Bahamian qualified as a Fellow in the Royal College of Anaesthetists London, England. He is a Medical Graduate of the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Class of 1978.

He is an author and has written numerous articles. He is especially known for his book “Anaesthesia in the Bahamas, a Model for the Developing Countries” published in 1996.

Dr Beneby holds a patent and has been extensively involved in clinical research over the past three decades. He is a leader in Medical Ethics in the Bahamas and the Caribbean serving on several committees locally and regionally.

He is a pioneer in the establishment of Clinical Ethical Committees in the Bahamas and is the longest continuous serving member of any Clinical Ethics Research Committee in the Bahamas.

He has been certified for many years by the National Institute of Health (NIH) Washington D.C. United States of America to perform reviews of international collaborative research between centers in North America and The Bahamas.

Dr Beneby has been involved in the HIV/AIDS research programme from the inception of the international collaboration component of this globally recognized Bahamas based research project.

Presently he sits as the Chairman of the Public Hospitals Authority Ethics Committee and a member of the Ministry of Health, National Insurance and Public Information Ethics Review Committee. Dr Beneby is married to Carolyn Beneby nee Eldon. They have one son.
