AFUWI and UWIAA Florida to host “Adopt-a-Student Mix & Mingle” in South Florida

TAMARAC – The Board of the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) and the Florida Chapter of The University of the West Indies Alumni Association will host an “Adopt a Student/ $1-A–Day” fundraising ‘Mix and Mingle’ reception in Florida on Friday, July 27, 2012 at Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill, 5711 N. University Drive, Tamarac, Florida, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

The event will be open to the public but you must RSVP to attend, and will include complimentary refreshments and entertainment.

The “$1-A-Day Drive” was launched at the offices of the Jamaican Consulate, in New York City on Thursday, March 22, 2012 with the New York City–based American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI).  

The program is asking the public to Adopt-A-Student by contributing to U$1-A-Day Drive, to a scholarship fund whereby they can donate monthly an  amount of  $30 ,half yearly $180 or for the year $360 towards the  tuition fees of $3000 per academic year for each student .

The program is the brain child of President and CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill and Partnership Board Chair of AFUWI, Mr. Lowell Hawthorne, noted “It takes a global village to raise a child”, and that he hoped the Adopt-A-Student program will draw support from every part of the globe. Noting the immense impact that an educated work force can have on civil society, Mr. Hawthorne who just released his autobiography , The Baker’s Son, a book which chronicles his company’s ‘rags to riches’ journey   hopes that the community will  assume some responsibility and become part of the solution.

Special guests will include Professor Gordon Shirley, who is pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and former US Ambassador from Jamaica to the USA. Members of the AFUWI Board, celebrities and other senior faculty of the UWI are expected to attend.  

The event will provide a unique opportunity for guests to Mix and Mingle, experience great cuisine and entertainment while supporting a very worthy cause. Event sponsors include Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery Grill, Dennis Shipping, and Grace Foods USA and Western Union.
