Non-Perishable Food Items and Bottled Water in Greatest Demand – Clothing No Longer Accepted
FT. LAUDERDALE – Thursday, October 2, will be the last day for residents to drop off donations for the hurricane relief effort sponsored by the Broward County Commission. Due to an over-abundance of clothing already received, only donations for non-perishable food items, canned goods and bottled water are being solicited for the final week of collections.
On September 18, Broward County identified five libraries and the Governmental Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale as collection sites for hurricane relief donations of food, clothing, bedding and personal hygiene items.Broward County Facilities Maintenance staff has been making daily pickups at donation sites and taking items to Food for the Poor, who is distributing them in Haiti.
The response from Broward County residents has been overwhelming. Since Food for the Poor began accepting disaster relief donations, more than 170 shipping containers valued at $20 million have been sent to Haiti.
Broward County employees have also opened their wallets for hurricane relief. To date, nearly $9,000 in payroll and annual leave donations has been contributed by County employees for victims in the Caribbean and the U.S. Gulf Coast.
