COCONUT CREEK – The Caribbean Bar Association will dedicate its 20th Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet to helping Haiti.
Hurricane Matthew, a powerful category 4 storm, had no mercy when it ripped across Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.
But this time, it was Haiti’s southwest peninsula that took the hardest hit – hundreds were killed, countless homes destroyed and the majority of the country’s crops have been washed away.
“Haiti is no stranger to hard times, but this latest natural disaster is a difficult one,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “Yet, we will never give up on helping those in need. We are moved beyond words by the outpouring of support our organization is receiving toward the recovery effort after Hurricane Matthew.”
Some of that much needed support will be coming from the South Florida Caribbean Bar Association, which has decided to dedicate a portion of its proceeds from this year’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet to Food For The Poor, which has been working in Haiti Since 1986.
“In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew, which barreled into Haiti and the Bahamas as a category 4 hurricane, we felt it imperative that as a community we join in the effort to recover and rebuild with our Caribbean neighbors,” said Devona A. Reynolds Perez, Franchise and Business Law Attorney. “The Executive Board of the CBA unanimously voted to donate all proceeds received from the raffle during the upcoming 20th Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet to hurricane relief efforts for Hurricane Matthew.”
The money raised through the CBA’s Champions web page will go directly towards providing relief and development for those in desperate need of assistance.

Caribbean Bar Association 20th Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet
The Caribbean Bar Association will celebrate its 20th Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, 2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., 33316.
The banquet is the largest fundraiser for the CBA’s Scholarship Program, which funds judicial and public interest legal internships for law students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The banquet also provides a platform to honor individuals and businesses for their contributions to the Caribbean and Caribbean-American communities.
Food For The Poor, which has served throughout the Caribbean and Latin America for almost 35 years, is this year’s recipient of the President’s Award. Executive Director Angel Aloma, the keynote speaker, will accept this award on behalf of the organization.
“Food For The Poor’s impressive track record and commitment to working with local charities and churches on the ground to distribute aid, build homes and help communities develop clean water and sustainable farming projects is unparalleled,” said Perez. “We were also impressed with the fact that more than 95% of all donations go directly to programs that help the poor.”
“It is truly remarkable to see the members of the Caribbean Bar Association, who represent a number of the Caribbean countries, joining forces to help families in Haiti to rebuild their lives,” said Aloma.
Guests will be treated to Caribbean-themed cuisine, raffle prizes, exciting musical and cultural performances and dancing throughout the night.
