Deadline nears for Caribbean Media Exchange Fellowships

CASTRIES, St. Lucia – Journalists and editors who would like media fellowships to attend Counterpart International’s Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) series have until Wednesday, May 17, 2006 to get their applications in.

St. Lucia will host the fifth anniversary and ninth full edition of CMEx, to be held October 12-16, 2006, in Castries.

All applicants should send two or more written examples of work relating to tourism or sustainable development issues published or aired between February 1, 2006 and May 15, 2006. Broadcast media need only submit one copy of their work – MP3s and transcripts are welcome.

All accompanying stories will automatically be entered for CMEx’s journalism awards. Applicants should submit a 200 word statement describing what he/she expects to contribute to, and gain from CMEx. Successful applicants agree to cover a tax-deductible administrative fee of US$75. Fellowships cover air fare, hotel, and conference registration which includes most conference meals.

“Chic Communications Concepts” will dominate CMEx IX, a four-day event which will attract some of the best minds in the region and beyond in the lively interactive format that is a hallmark of the CMEx series. Delegates will discuss how best to communicate the benefits and pitfalls of tourism using both traditional and new media, and also examine the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on the region and its tourism industry, and the threat posed by US passport regulations to the region and what governments and industry are doing about it.

CMEx is an interactive workshop that allows journalists from the Caribbean, North America and Europe to interact with representatives of the hospitality sector and government and discuss tourism policies aimed at improving the lives of Caribbean people.
