2015 Diaspora Community Honours for Jamaica Independence Gala presentation announced

SOUTH FLORIDA  – Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Franz Hall, has announced the Consulate’s Diaspora Honours for 2015 with five (5) persons being recognized for their outstanding contributions in various areas of community development in South Florida.

The following persons were selected for Diaspora Community Service awards in categories of Changemakers and Luminaries listed as follows:  Changemakers – Registered Nurse and professional health care worker, Mrs. Adrienne “Addy” Chin-Ogilvie in the area of Philanthropy; and 17 year old Bill Gates Millenium Scholar and Stanford University freshman, Deborah Gordon as a promising Youth Leader.  In the category for Luminary are Dr. Cheryl Holder for her role in community health; Janice Cover, Ph.D, in the field of Education; and literary artist and Miami Dade College professor, Geoffrey Philp for Culture. 

An independent selection committee appointed by the Consul General evaluated and approved the final selection of awardees from the nominations received from the public.

The presentation of plaques and citations will take place at the Jamaica Independence Anniversary Gala and Diaspora Honours “Staying the course…building a legacy” presented  jointly by the Consulate General and the Jamaica United Relief Association (JURA), a community-based charitable organization, on Saturday (Aug. 1) commencing at 7:00 p.m. at the Signature Grand in Davie.

Congratulating the awardees, Consul General Franz Hall stated that “as Jamaica celebrates its 53rd year of Independence, it is opportune to recognize the contribution of individual Jamaicans to the development of their communities.  I therefore salute this year’s awardees for their contribution and achievements that have and will continue to redound to the benefit of the Community. I also extend sincere thanks to the selection committee, which had the difficult task of choosing the awardees this year, from a stellar set of nominations that were received by the Consulate-General.”
