WTPS – 1080AM The Peoples’ Station to host “City of Miami Puts Seniors First!” Hurricane Preparedness

Miami – June 1st marks the beginning of the 2006 Hurricane Season. In order to help better prepare seniors in District 5, City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones presents the First Annual Seniors First Rally & Expo on Hurricane Preparedness on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coconut Grove Exposition Center located at 2700 South Bayshore Drive.

The First Annual Seniors First Rally & Expo for Hurricane Preparedness will be hosted by meteorologist John Gerard from WTVJ/NBC 6 along with Joy-Ann Reid of the newly launched talk radio format 1080AM WTPS – The Peoples’ Station.

The Hurricane expo will provide over 1700 seniors with information needed to be better prepared during the 2006 Hurricane Season. Representatives from various organizations including Florida Power & Light, Public Works, AARP, City of Miami Fire-Rescue, and the City of Miami Solid Waste Department will be in attendance to answer questions, address concerns and present information on the do’s and don’ts when confronted with a hurricane. During the expo, seniors will have the opportunity to register themselves and other seniors for hurricane emergency services. Free hurricane survival kits will be provided and include items such as: flashlights, batteries and dry foods.

“Last season, we were met with a number of unexpected storms which in turn, brought about uncertainties throughout South Florida, specifically with our most fragile residents, the Senior citizens of our community.” said Commissioner Spence-Jones “ Many seniors were displaced and at a significant disadvantage during the height of the season. As a result, the City of Miami, specifically, District 5 is having this expo to better inform the senior community on the importance of being prepared before and after a hurricane strikes.”
