Vice-Mayor Sharief & Commissioner Holness to be honored at Broward’s Black Elected Officials’ Gala

HOLLYWOOD – Broward County Vice-Mayor Barbara Sharief and County Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness will be honored at the Broward Black Elected Officials’ eighth annual Black History Month Gala, which will be held 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

“THE 2013 GALA: “Hold Fast To Dreams,” is presented by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Platinum sponsors are Comcast and Amscot Financial. Other sponsors include Waste Management, VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, FPL and Charter Schools of Excellence and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The annual BBEO gala recognizes a prestigious list of individuals and corporations for their community service in the categories of political, community and corporate.


Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness

Commissioner Holness and West Park Vice-Mayor Felicia M. Brunson are the honorees in the political category. A special award will be presented to Broward Vice-Mayor Sharief, who is CEO and President and founder of South Florida Pediatric Homecare.


Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief

Vice-Mayor Sharief entered the political arena in 2009 when she was elected to the Miramar Commission rising to the city’s Vice-Mayor in 2010. She was elected to the County Commission that same year. Recently selected as County Vice-Mayor, she is in line to become next year the first African-American woman to serve as Broward County Mayor.

Commissioner Holness, a real estate entrepreneur, began his political career in 2004 when he was elected to the Lauderhill Commission. He was elected to the county seat in 2010 – the first Jamaican native to hold that office – and was reelected in 2012.

The BBEO Gala this year adds a new category of Lifetime Achievement. The inaugural Lifetime Achievement Honoree is U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson.

This year’s community awards will be given to couples who work together to better South Florida. The recipients are Westside Gazette Publisher Bobby Henry and his wife, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry and Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner Levoyd Williams and his wife, Beverly, a civic leader.

The corporate honorees are Comcast and Amscot Financial.

The Broward Black Elected Officials are a 501©3 organization that supports education through scholarship awards, direct grants to the UNCF and historically black colleges. The organization also presents community outreach programs.

The gala has been helmed since 2007 by special events producer Roy H. Campbell, who has created mega- events with such international celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, Patti LaBelle and Will Smith.
