Veronica Campbell added to top field for adidas Track Classic

CARSON, CA – Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, the #1 female track athlete at the 2004 Olympic Games, has joined the roster of top international athletes set to compete in the adidas Track Classic on May 21, organizers announced today. Also set to compete from Jamaica is Omar Brown, the 2006 Commonwealth Games 200-meter gold medalist.

A triple medalist in Athens (200m and 4x100m gold, 100m bronze), Campbell was the most successful female track athlete at the 2004 Olympics. After sitting out the middle of last season with an injury, the Jamaican sprint queen came back in time to finish strong, and then won a 200m silver medal at the Commonwealth Games last month. Her winning time of 22.05 in her 200m victory in Athens was the fastest in the world for 2004, and no woman has run faster in the last five years.

Last year at the adidas Track Classic, Campbell easily won at 100 meters, in 10.96 seconds, for the fastest time in the world up to that point in 2005.

The finals-only event will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, and will be broadcast live on ESPN from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. PT. (4 p.m.-6 p.m. ET).

Also added on Friday, April 21 to the dozens of Olympic and World Championship stars aligned to compete are Ana Guevara, the 2003 World Champion at 400 meters; and Alistair Cragg of Ireland, the 2005 European Indoor Champion at 3000 meters. Americans Jeremy Wariner, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 400 meters, and Allyson Felix, the 2005 World Champion at 200m, were announced last week.
