Uptown Bangarang – What a Bangarang!

PEMBROKE PINES – South Florida theatre goers have been laughing at life in the lower strata in our society like in the recent plays Passa Passa and Girlie’s Bashment Wedding .

This Mother’s Day weekend you will get the opportunity to see how the people above Half Way Tree handle their problems, their Passa Passa, when Sunshine Theatre Company presents Basil Dawkins’ award winning comedy play Uptown Bangarang.

Basil Dawkins is undoubtedly Jamaica’s foremost playwright and this production again bears this out as the play garnered 6 nominations for awards and was the Actor Boy Awards winner in the Best Comedy and the Best Supporting Actor categories.

Showtimes are:

Friday, May 11 8pm @ Richmond Heights Middle School

Saturday, May 12 8pm @ North Miami Beach Performing Arts Center

Sunday, May 13 4pm & 8pm @ Coral Springs Center for the Arts

The fun moves the following weekend to:

Saturday, May 19 8pm @ William T Dwyer High School

Sunday, May 20 6pm @ Melbourne Auditorium

Uptown Bangarang stars Douglas Prout, Maylynne Walton, Ruth Hoshing, Maurice Bryan, Max Woodham and Sakina Deer and is directed by Jefferey Anderson –Gunther who is on loan from the Caribbean American Repertory Theatre (he is the dreadlocks seen in many action films including Steven Segal’s ‘Marked for Death’).

The play centers around a pastor who has aspirations in politics but he has a psychotic wife, a son who is not sure of who he is or what he wants and they both have eyes for the helper. It deals with such topics as sexuality, sexual orientation, Christianity, mental illness, pastor/ politician and class distinction in an uptown setting. Dawkins’ writings have been categorized as ‘Dramedy’ laughter with substance.

The shows are being presented in association with Air Jamaica and CRS Promotion in South Miami and Queen Pebbles Promotions in Melbourne/Palm Bay. At the show on Friday may 11th, Air Jamaica is having a free cocktail reception with music by Pluto & Co. and a Special Mother’s Day Tribute by singer/ choir master, Steve Higgins.

Tickets for the events are $30 for General seats and $35 for Reserved Seats. There is an additional charge for tickets purchased at the door. Tickets are available from selected Caribbean outlets in Dade Broward, Palm Beach and Palm Bay and also online at www.sunshinetheatrecompany.com.
