NEW YORK – The Jamaica Minnesota Organization (JMO) has partnered with United Way of Jamaica to undertake a global billion dollar fundraising campaign to support a range of programmes being undertaken by United Way.
The funds raised will assist at-risk youth and the mentally and physically challenged, and provide skills training, employment generation and conflict resolution programmes. In addition, proceeds will be invested in education and healthy lifestyle initiatives.
In underscoring the importance of the partnership, President of JMO, Dr. Karlene Silvera, said that the campaign is in keeping with the core mission of the organization, which is to play an active role in the betterment of Jamaica. “JMO is honoured to sponsor this campaign of raising one billion Jamaican dollars, which will raise charitable capital for Jamaicans in need, who are served by the United Way of Jamaica,” she stated.

Donors in the United States (US) are being reminded that their contributions are tax deductible. Dr. Silvera informed that special information desks have been set up at both the JMO and the United Way of Jamaica, to provide further information to the public.
An affiliate of United Way International, United Way of Jamaica was incorporated in 1985 and is an autonomous non-profit, private voluntary organization registered with the Government of Jamaica.
The organization supports a variety of projects and agencies including Dispute Resolution Foundation, Family and Parenting Centre, Jamaica AIDS Support, Jamaica Cancer Society, Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, Jamaica Save the Children Fund, Mona Rehabilitation Centre, Mustard Seed Communities, Salvation Army and the SOS Children’s Village.
Established in 1992, JMO’s mission is to positively impact the social and economic conditions in Jamaica through scholarship and school adoption programmes; the shipment of computers and other educational supplies to institutions, including the medical school at the University of the West Indies and the Ministry of Education. JMO has also organized trade and investment conferences, disaster relief and health outreach programmes.
